Many Christmas cards have a summary of what families have been through during the past year: weddings, engagements, a new pet or the birth of a baby.

Well, the Chen family had a unique announcement on theirs for 2021. In a TODAY article by Jennifer Chen, the mother of two talked about how her daughter now wanted to be referred to as “Clark” instead of “Claire” and how that became the headline on their annual Christmas card.

In the opening paragraphs, Chen detailed her anxiety before posting the announcement on social media and what led up to her child’s decision to switch genders and pronouns to they/them/he. She explained how she read It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity and Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope to her child, which influenced the switch.

Following the decision, Mrs. Chen and her daughter Claire took a trip to the salon, where she got her hair cut to appear more masculine. Shortly after, the announcement on social media was made, with one of the daughters wearing a shirt and tie, while the other donned a flowery dress.
