Parents and Republican lawmakers are demanding answers over allegations that a male Space Camp counselor who identifies as a female was given access to the girl’s dormitories.
Clay Yarbrough, of Huntsville, Alabama, first reported on his Facebook page over his concerns that a transgender counselor was employed by the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

“My daughter was planning on going to space camp next week but we have just found out that this freak is a team lead and a hall monitor in the girls dorms and at times could be allowed to be alone in the halls at night,” Yarbrough wrote in a now-viral post. “This is a man that claims to be a woman, and they allow it.”
“There’s no reason to have a transgender in charge of boys and girls at a space camp in Huntsville, Alabama; that makes no sense,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville told 1819News.com. “All you have to do is read the social media of this person and you’ll be aghast at what they talk about and the things that they believe in. You know. I believe in the nuclear family. I believe in men and women. I don’t believe in 64 different genders.”
Rep. Dale Strong (R-AL) demanded that the male counselor be fired.
“The U.S. Space and Rocket Center has long been a champion in promoting a science-based education in North Alabama,” Strong told 1819News.com. “As an educational institution for our nation’s children, it is critical that it put their safety and wellbeing first. I call on the Center to immediately remove this individual and open a safety review to consider the potential harm and damages they have inadvertently caused children.”
U.S. Space and Rocket Center released a statement saying they were investigating but had found no instances of wrongdoing.
“We value the safety of all individuals – our students, our employees, and our guests,” the statement said. “In the past few days, many people on our staff have received threats, some general, and some very specific. This is not okay and is a subsequent, and very serious issue that we are dealing with internally and with the appropriate authorities.”
The Rocket Center said no specific allegations were raised in the original social media post.
“The U.S. Space & Rocket Center would like to assure concerned parents, teachers and the public that no child has been physically harmed on our campus,” the statement said. “In fact, no such allegation was ever raised as part of the recent social media controversy. In addition, our operation is designed with layers of protection to mitigate against single points of failure.”
