Crime is spiking across the nation – not just in big cities, but places like Huntington, West Virginia.
Karen Collinsworth has supervised the Starbucks on the campus of Marshall University for years.
“I’ve been here since 1976. I fell in love with Huntington. I’m from outside of Columbus, Ohio,” Collinsworth told Today. “I’ve been in the food industry since 1978 and that is my passion. I’ve loved waiting tables, I just do. Your customer service develops and you just want to please people.”
She’s known among students more as a mom than a barista.
“I love coming into work knowing that she’s gonna be there. I talk to her about literally everything,” college student Cassie Gray told the television network. “She’s like my mom when I’m away from home and can’t talk to my mom.”
The other day someone broke into her car – stole the catalytic converter. Long story short – she had no way to get to work.
So her colleagues concocted a secret plan – with the help of hundreds of university students. They launched a fundraising campaign to buy Miss Karen a new car.
Broke college kids ponied up $5 and $10 donations. The university president dropped a $5,000 donation. More than $40,000 in all.
Miss Karen told Today she was just overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of her customers.
“All the $5 donations meant more to me than $1,000 or $3,000,” Collinsworth says. “It was just precious coming from these college kids that can’t afford a cup of coffee. Just goes to show you their kindness.”
I’m not a big Starbucks drinker – I’ve always thought their coffee tasted bitter. But the stuff they’re brewing at the Starbucks in Huntington, West Virginia tastes blessed.
NOTE FROM TODD: It’s vitally important for us to support religious liberty law firms that are out there on the front lines defending our freedom. Alliance Defending Freedom is doing an amazing job. They’ve taken cases all the way to the Supreme Court and they’ve won. And ADF doesn’t charge their clients a single penny. This month I’m raising money to help ADF keep fighting the good fight.
