“The View” Host Says American Flag Makes Her Feel Unsafe

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin sparked a patriotic firestorm Monday after saying she feels unsafe when she sees American flags displayed throughout some neighborhoods. Be sure to click here to get my breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.

Hostin made the remarks during a discussion about a Reuters photograph showing masked members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front riding the Washington, D.C., Metro near a black woman during Fourth of July weekend.

Reuters reported that hundreds of Patriot Front members marched through Washington, wearing uniforms and masks and carrying variations of the U.S. flag. Many wondered on social media whether the Southern Poverty Law Center might have funded or sponsored their efforts.

Hostin went on to compare hats adorned with the American flag to a KKK hood. Watch her comments below:

“There are times when I walk into a community and I see American flags all over the community and I suddenly feel unsafe, because there’s a section of this country that has co-opted the American flag and they equate being an American or an American flag with White supremacy and that should never be the symbol of White supremacy. But they have weaponized [the flag].”

Critics quickly blasted Hostin on social media.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala. shared a clip of Hostin’s comments and wrote, “Mental illness.”

Conservative author Nick Adams posted, “If Sunny Hostin hates seeing the American flag, she can LEAVE!” Actor Dean Cain weighed in with a two-word response: “Idiots. Insane.”

NewsNation host Katie Pavlich mocked the remark, posting that perhaps a “Hate Has No Home Here” yard sign would make Hostin feel better.

Hostin graduated from the University of Notre Dame, is married to a renowned surgeon and owns homes in New York City as well as Martha’s Vineyard. She also has a television contract by some estimates worth $2-3 million annually.

It should be noted that Ms. Hostin has achieved great success in no small part because of the American flag and those who shed their blood so she might be free.
