A Massachusetts town shut down a little boy’s summertime ice cream stand because they said it violated the health department’s food ordinances.
Danny Doherty, 12, set up an ice cream stand in his neighborhood to raise money for his brother’s hockey team – a special education program for young people with disabilities.
“I think the most disappointing part of that was that someone, one of our neighbors, somebody driving by, decided to take time to complain about a kid’s stand,” Nancy Doherty told Fox News Digital. “I was really not mad. I’d say more disappointed that [it] happened.”
That’s right, folks. A neighbor in Norwood ratted out Danny to town leaders.
“The Norwood Health Department has received a complaint that you are making and selling scooped ice cream and cookies at your residential property,” read an official letter sent to the family. “The Massachusetts Food Code (105CMR. 590) does not allow for the sale of ice cream made in the home. Please desist in these activities.”
Instead of throwing away the pints of homemade shaved chocolate and fluffernutter ice cream, the family gave it away to friends and neighbors.
When the owner of Furlong’s Candies discovered what had happened, she took up where Danny left off and offered to hold a special fundraiser for the Boston Bear Cubs.
Hundreds of people turned out over the weekend to purchase ice cream and raise money for the hockey program.
“Sometimes what seems like the worst situation turns out to be the best situation,” said Nancy Thrasher.
Five bucks says the irate neighbor is lactose intolerant.
