Silverton, Colorado Mayor Shane Fuhrman announced during a town trustee meeting that the Pledge of Allegiance will no longer be recited at the start of meetings, according to KDVR.

“Due to direct and indirect threats, inappropriate comments in and out of public meetings and general divisiveness and issues created in our community, we will not be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance during Town of Silverton trustee meetings,” the mayor told the board members.

The mayor did not provide any specific information about the alleged threats and comments, CBS Denver reported.

Trustee Molly Barela challenged his power, calling out his “unilateral” decision.

“[The Pledge of Allegiance] has been done for a long time. We took an oath, and we as a board decided it would be done,” said Barela.

During the public comment period, an attendee said she wanted to recite the pledge. Several others, including two board members, stood and joined her, which prompted Fuhrman to say they were out of order.

Rep. Lauren Boebert blasted the mayor, tweeting: “It’s hard to put into words what kind of anti-American disgrace this is. Mayor Fuhrman should resign and purchase a one-way ticket to China where he won’t have worry about hearing the pledge!”
