An Oklahoma school board member is raising eyebrows claiming unmasked children could kill their classmates.

“It’s just not okay for kids to commit murder for coming to school without a mask, and when it comes down to it, it’s possible,” Norman Public Schools board member Linda Sexton said at Monday’s meeting. “They will cause a death of another child because they come to school without a mask.”

Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) is not in favor of mask mandates for school children. In May, the governor signed an executive order prohibiting state agencies from adopting mask or coronavirus vaccine requirements to enter a state building or office. In July, the governor ruled out school mask mandates, adding that he is “not planning on declaring an emergency.”

“I want to pursue the legal avenues that we have to defy Governor Stitt, and that’s not how I like to pronounce his name, by the way,” said Sexton.

“The shocking totalitarian comments from this board member demonstrate the immediate and emergency need for universal school choice for any and all students so parents and guardians can choose the school that best meets parents’ and students’ needs regarding COVID-19—or anything else for that matter,” Jonathan Small, president of Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs told ToddStarnes.com.

Sexton – who is not the parent of a young child in Norman Public Schools—received some applause for her comments.

“I’m one of those people that when I get very, very angry, it makes me cry,” she said. “If anybody is going to flee to virtual school, I think it needs to be the maskless, (and) I don’t think any parent with an asthmatic six-year-old, eight-year-old, or 12-year-old should have to make that choice that their child can’t go to school because some other kid is going to spread a germ that could kill them.”

No other school board member responded to the remarks. The board adjourned after the comments.
