The incident took place at West Brook High School in Beaumont, Texas.

Are public schools unsafe for children?

In the videos, one student clearly kicks, punches and slams the other’s head into the bathroom wall. Students observing the event can be heard in the room but no one expresses any concern or attempts to help the defenseless student.

The offending student has allegedly been arrested before and was released back into the school system very quickly.

“This is not his first rodeo,” Beaumont City Councilman Mike Getz said of the offending student, per a local Beaumont area news outlet. “He has been arrested before, but current state and federal law allow these offenders back on campus after a relatively short stay at a juvenile detention facility.”

Getz added that the school system failed the student who was assaulted by not providing him a safe learning environment.

The local Beaumont area news station also reported the offending student has been arrested and all students in the video have been identified in the investigation.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s office responded to the situation.

“We’re aware of the situation and the video from West Brook,” First Assistant District Attorney Pat Knauth told KFDM/Fox 4 News. “There is an investigation underway by the BISD Police Department. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has reached out to BISD PD and offered our assistance. When that is done, we’ll handle the matter appropriately.”

The Beaumont Independent School District also made a statement to KDFM.

“Beaumont ISD is aware of recent videos surfacing that involve a violent incident,” a school district official said. “This behavior is unacceptable and these acts of violence displayed will not be tolerated. The Beaumont ISD police and administration investigated the content of the videos and identified all students participating in the physical altercation. Disciplinary actions have been taken to the fullest extent. The district will continue working to ensure that this type of behavior does not occur on any campus.”
