The Taliban shot and killed a woman in Afghanistan for not wearing a head covering Tuesday after vowing to protect “women’s rights,” Fox News reports.
A woman was assassinated in Takhar province after she went out in public without a burka, according to the outlet.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid held its first news conference Tuesday after taking control of Afghanistan over the weekend. Mujahid said the extremist group would honor women’s rights – within sharia law.
CNN correspondent Clarissa Ward interviewed citizens in Kabul, pointing out that burka sales were skyrocketing because people feared the Taliban’s new rule.
This also comes as State Department spokesman Ned Price called on the Taliban to create an “inclusive” government with “full and meaningful participation of women.”
