The Department of Justice is planning to pay an organization $1 million to create a National Resource Center for Justice-Involved LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit Youth.
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) says, “This program provides training and technical assistance to juvenile justice practitioners to assist them in meeting the needs of justice-involved LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit youth to ensure that contact with the juvenile justice system is rare, fair and beneficial.”
Additionally, the document reads, “OJJDP supports states, localities, and Tribes to reform juvenile justice systems so that they are equitable, create safer communities, and empower youth to lead productive lives.”
In an effort to define two-spirit youth, the OJJDP called it an umbrella term to describe any youth who have more than just a feminine or masculine spirit or are not cisgender.
The organization who receives the $1 million dollar grant will be tasked with items such as filling gaps in knowledge about the intersectionality of LGBTQ youth of color, create program models that are “linguistically competent” and come up with “innovative youth justice policies,” according to Breitbart.
Breitbart also reported that Leanetta Jessie, a Program and Grants Management Specialist at the Office of Justice Programs led a webinar explaining the focus of the proposed organization.
Jessie used to work as the Family League of Baltimore as the Director of Disproportionate Minority Contact and Social Justice Initiatives. On their website, the Family League of Baltimore’s stated goal is to “address inequities in education, health, and economic opportunity through an anti-racist lens.”
