Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) first nominated former President Trump in the seventh round as Rep. Kevin McCarthy failed once again to get 218 votes.
He also nominated Trump in the eighth round. A ninth round is expected.
National radio host Todd Starnes said Trump is the right pick for Speaker of the House minutes before Gaetz announced his choice.
“There is only one person who can fix all of this and his name is Donald John Trump,” Starnes said. “There’s only one person who can drain the House Swamp.”
“What if for the next 100 days Donald Trump was installed to get the Republicans’ House in order?” Starnes said.
Gaetz garnered a reaction from the chamber when he said, “Donald John Trump” for his speaker pick.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who was seated next to Gaetz, smiled and spoke to him after he sat back down.
“Trump for Speaker” began trending on Twitter Thursday afternoon.
