Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who lost three rounds of votes Tuesday, lost the fourth round Wednesday. A fifth-round for speaker is expected.
The final vote count for round four was:
- McCarthy (R): 201
- Jeffries (D): 212
- Donalds (R): 20
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) nominated McCarthy for the fourth-round Wednesday.
In opposition to McCarthy, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) nominated Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), who flipped from McCarthy to supporting Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) in the third round Tuesday.
“We knew Kevin was short,” Donalds told reporters Tuesday night. “It’s been like two months. Bro, you got to close the deal. You had two months. And so, at this point now, if you can’t close it, we gotta find who can.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) opened Wednesday’s congressional session by making a “point of order” that a quorum was not present.
Unlike the DEMs, who do leadership by acclamation, the GOP is having a deliberative process of what leadership looks like in the House. We know DC does not work. Having a deliberative discussion(it is messy at times) but in the long term, is in the nation’s best interests. pic.twitter.com/1DTv36IXhr

McCarthy’s initial loss for speakership was the first time in 100 years the speaker was not elected in the first round by the majority party.
Fox News Channel went after Republicans for failing to support McCarthy.
Fox & Friends called it a disaster for Republicans. Sean Hannity called it a total clown show. Mark Levin said conservatives who oppose McCarthy are boneheaded fools. The Five said the House Freedom Caucus makes AOC and The Squad look positively reasonable.
