Republicans better carry through on their “Commitment to America,” Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) said on the “Todd Starnes Show.”
Nehls told host Todd Starnes he is confident House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will be the next speaker of the House when Republicans take back the majority in Congress.
“We’ve had opportunities to sit down with Leader McCarthy, and we said, you know, if the American people or when the American people give us the gavel back, we damn well better take care of it,” Nehls said Thursday. “And that means we got to get this reckless spending under control. We got to save our children, save our schools. And we certainly got to find ways to get our economy back on track.”
The member of the House Freedom Caucus said he believes the “Commitment to America” McCarthy is a step in the right direction.
“I understand why we need to have a commitment to America, but we got to understand it’s America we’re committed to,” Nehls said. “I mean, we’re spending billions of dollars. I was one of 57 that said, I’m not giving Ukraine $40 billion. You’ve got to be crazy, because the reason I voted no is there really is no strategy. There is no end state there. This administration, this president has not given me or the American people a strategy as how do we deal with Putin going into the Ukraine. So I voted no on that.”
The commitment reportedly includes adding 200,000 more police on the streets, which Nehls said would be good compared to the “defund the police” movement coming from Democrats.
“I believe that this commitment to America is going to certainly help stop the bleed,” he added. “And I have to give a little bit of our faith and confidence that Leader McCarthy is truly going to stay true to his word and understand this is a commitment to America, and we must put America first.”
