Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT) called out the Salt Lake Tribune Friday for “whitesplaining” after the paper published an editorial cartoon comparing him to the Ku Klux Klan.
The cartoon by satirist Pat Bagley compares Owens, a black Republican, to the KKK for shining a light on the southern border crisis under President Biden.
“This is pathetic,” Owens tweeted, adding the KKK is a “radical hate group that terrorized me in my youth, because I am one of many sounding the alarm of the trauma being forced by women and children crossing the border.”
He called it “woke racism.”
In another tweet, Owens said he expects an apology, adding, “I won’t hold my breathe.”
Bagley, after the Utah congressional delegation issued a statement condemning the cartoon, tweeted: “Bring it on.”
The cartoonist tried to defend himself on Twitter but Burgess responded in two separate tweets:
