Three more dangerous chemicals were discovered in the small Ohio town where a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous materials derailed just 10 days ago, according to The Hill.
The outlet reports that a letter sent by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Norfolk Southern reveals three more chemicals: ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate and isobutylene were in the cars that derailed.

Sil Caggiano, a hazardous materials specialist, told The Hill this information is concerning because ethylhexyl acrylate is a carcinogen and is known to cause burning and irritation to the skin and eyes. He added that breathing it in can cause shortness of breath and throat irritation.
Additionally, Isobutylene can cause dizziness and tiredness when inhaled.
“We basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open,” Caggiano told the outlet.
The train derailment in East Palestine on Feb. 3 left nearly 50 destroyed box cars leaking hazardous materials near the eastern Ohio village, which is very close to the Pennsylvania border.

Days later, vinyl chloride was released from the cars and ignited to remove the chemical in a controlled manner and avoid a large explosion. This caused a huge plume of smoke to hover over the town that could be seen for miles.

Residents in a 1-mile by 3-mile radius of the village were evacuated during the controlled release on Feb. 6 by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D). They were told they could safely return on Wednesday, per the Cincinnati Inquirer.
“I was surprised when they quickly told the people they can go back home, but then said if they feel like they want their homes tested, they can have them tested. I would’ve far rather they did all the testing,” Caggiano said.

He added that chemicals could still be in homes and on objects until they are cleaned thoroughly.
At this time, the EPA is conducting water and air quality tests in the surrounding area.
Fox Carolina reports another train derailment occurred Monday, Feb. 13, in Enoree, South Carolina.
