The Pittsburgh City Council and Pittsburgh Public Schools board have declared war on Chick-fil-A.
City leaders are furious because the most popular fast food restaurant in the nation is a title sponsor at a children’s event during the Pittsburgh Marathon.
Marathon organizers recently announced a three-year deal to sponsor the kid’s marathon.
But city leaders accuse Chick-fil-A of promoting hateful beliefs against the LGBTQ community. And unless organizers give the family-owned restaurant the heave-ho, they will ban district employees and schools from participating in the event.
“They have several beliefs, which they’ve expressed officially, largely through religious basis, that are quite discriminatory and are quite inconsistent with the district’s policies regarding discrimination on the basis of gender, race, etc.,” school solicitor Ira Weiss told the Post-Gazette.
For the record, that’s a flat-out lie. Chick-fil-A has never been accused if discriminating against LGBT individuals.
The school board is considering a resolution which would withhold district support from the children’s event as long as Chick-fil-A is a sponsor.
“This is really about the children and about sending the message to the children of Pittsburgh, and really to everyone, that Pittsburgh, as far as city council is concerned, is welcoming and inclusive for everyone,” city council member Erika Strassburger told the newspaper.
