Dallas Cowboys Lays Down Law: Disrespect the Flag, You Will Not Play
America’s team will not disrespect the flag. Period.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones laid down the law Sunday – warning players that anyone who disrespects the flag will not play.
“We cannot in the NFL, in any way, give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag,” Jones told the Dallas Morning News. “We cannot do that.”
Jones’ announcement came the same day Vice President Mike Pence walked out of the Indianapolis-San Francisco game after a number of 49’ers players took a knee during the national anthem.
“We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, But there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag,” he told the newspaper.
The Morning News reported that every Dallas Cowboy stood for the national anthem before the Green Bay game. However, two players thrust their fists in the air.
“Yeah, I don’t know about that, but if there is anything that is disrespectful to the flag then we will not play. You understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period. Period,” he declared.
Jones told the newspaper the team has suffered backlash from angry season ticket holders and sponsors over the kneeling.
A recent national poll indicates the NFL has fallen behind MLB and the NBA in popularity. Meanwhile, television ratings have taken a nose dive.
“There is no equivocation here,” Jones said. “We’ll stand for the flag.”
